Were cartoons really more wholesome “back in the day?” Popeye vs. SpongeBob?
I was having a deep conversation with some students who said that kiddie TV was more wholesome back in the day, and said that Popeye, for example, ate vegetables and stood up against bad guys while SpongeBob is merely an idiot. What's your take?
I’ve got to admit - I love the old cartoons! I mean, there’s nothing like them today. They were simple and down to earth, pre-political correctness, innocent, delightfully entertaining, included a moral lesson without being preachy and annoying, had great characters, cute, easy to relate to and likable, hilariously funny, and didn’t insult your intelligence. Okay, that being said, SpongeBob and and some of the newer ones have their place, too. In fact, SpongeBob had a lot of good qualities and not sure how long, but has been around quite a few years now so has withstood the test of time well. It’s a clever cartoon and appeals to a lot of adults as well as the kids. Popeye and SpongeBob are both good cartoons and I think they’re both pretty "wholesome".
kiddie TV was more wholesome, but todays animes are much better than those back in the day.
depends how far back. yes a lot
had a moral tale in the end.
now it’s about fights, (ninja turtles, power
rangers), and satire, (simpsons).
Popeye owns
I agree back in the 50s and 60s cartoons were a lot better then now
there were better to me because they were hand drawn and people used to put a lot more work into cartoons than they do now.
spongebob all the way…
spongebob is a sweet and adorable charictar but popeye is a muscely old man who beat people up
I would take Tom & Jerry over SpongeBob any day. However, I don’t know if I’d call it more wholesome. There was some brutal stuff in those old T&J and Looney Tunes cartoons. All in all though I would say the older ones were definitely better.
I remember smoking some good weed and watching Popeye after school, does that count as wholesome?! LOL
No, actually, I don’t think they were more wholesome, (ex. Bugs Bunny) many of the cartoons were racist or showed the characters smoking and drinking.
But I prefer old cartoons to Spongebob any day!
yeah they were more wholesome back then
You could argue "wholesome" but then you look at some of the racist undertones to the Bugs Bunny cartoons and things like that and could argue that some of that has been extricated. At the same time you’ve definitely got some OTT type things out there as well. So I suppose not.
I miss the OLD cartoons where it was actually something to watch that taught us some morales
I NEVER let my kids watch Teletubbies I think that is the most retarted show on TV
eh oh lala
eh oh Tinky Winky
( SPEAK ENGLISH!!!!!! ) LOL
depends on who you ask. look at bugs bunny and other looney toons. full of violence, guns and explosives, and hitting, smoking, drinking… today we have a wide variety. i don’t let my kids watch cartoon network. but nick jr. i do. yo gabba gabba has songs about eating veggies and "don’t bite your friends" (lol)
but then there is the draw back. look at dora, i am afraid she might be teaching my kids it is okay to travel through jungles, across rivers, across bridges inhabited with trolls…. unassisted. i mean that little girl can’t be more than 5 and she is all over the place. lol!!
and sponge bob is such a noneducational cartoon and worthless when compared to anything else. it is kind of a poor comparison.
Cartoons were good back in the ’50’s and ’60’s.
Roadrunner,Tom & Jerry,Rocky & Bullwinkle,Underdog,Superman, Casper and Felix the Cat
Having grwon up watching popeye, and having watched many sponge bob in the last few years with a son now, I have to admit sponge bob is awfully good…
Yes the older ones had moral tales to them, the current ones are just for entertainment purposes only
I’ll of course take the good "oldies" any day. They made a heck of a lot more sense, were more geared to reality & actually had story lines to them…Today’s cartoons just look like a bunch of jerks jumping around doing much of nothing…
