Swearing in cartoons?
Anyone notice that in many cartoons you can actually understand swear words in the muttering etc.
The only cartoon I can think of is Popeye, but there are quite a few that will have a few swear words in it. But Popeye has at least one swear word in just about every toon written for him.
Between him and Brutus I am sure Sweet Pee will turn out pretty raunchy.
In the 443.5 hours of children's programming analyzed by the PTC,
they found
858 incidents of verbal aggression (e.g. abusive yelling, mean-spirited insults and put-downs)
250 incidents of offensive language (such as excretory references or euphemisms for obscene language)
595 incidents of disruptive, disrespectful or otherwise problematic attitudes and behaviors
275 incidents of sexual content
so please don't tell me there are none.

When many of those old cartoons were produced Hollywood was governed by the Hayes Code. No actual swear words were used but the mutterings were close enough to use your imagination. By the way Popeye was pretty progressive for the day, as you notice Olive Oil was a single mom. Just who was Sweet Pea’s father. To me he looked a lot like Wimpy.
That is so funny! I have noticed that too. I love Tivo because I can rewind and listen to it again. It makes me laugh to think that the cartoonist and voice over actors are laughing while putting it together.
If the cartoons are aimed at a younger audience, then the swearing could be a problem (although if parents don’t want their kids to hear it, they can not let them watch those shows. It’s not like the kids don’t hear worse at school every day, unfortunately.).
I’ve seen a lot of old Popeye cartoons and haven’t noticed any bad language. But it is possible that one was slipped in while he muttered. BTW the muttering was the actor ab-libbing during moments when nothing was written for him.
Yes, there used to be a lot of violence, swearing and other now unacceptable behavior in older cartoons. They recently (about 5 years) put ratings on them and when that happened all the good ones (at least in my oppinion) were put on diffrent channels, turned to late night or where taken off in general. (Think of Ren & Stimpy)
Sound like you listen to them a bit too closely. If you don’t want to hear it, turn it off. And SweetPee is going to be a sailor and talk like a sailor-get over it!
well in the spongebob movie mr. krabs said jacka $$ once i dont know if you consider it a cus word (BUT STUPID YAHOO DOES THATS WHY I HAVE TO WRITE IT LIKE I DID) and in adult cartoons they swear all the time.
Not all cartoons are for little kids. Like the Simpsons they have quite a few "cuss" words.
well, i dont notice swearing in cartoons (except animated sitcoms) but i notice mild swearing in anime. i think swearing is no big deal, if sumthong bad happens nobody says ‘oh rats!’ u say GODAMMIT! or CRAP!! cartoons shouldt be happy-merry-go-lucky p ussy talk, they should teach boys to be real men!
