Look, the whole spinach fetish was an invention of the animations. Popeye didn’t need Spinach to, for example, beat up Ham Gravy and take his girlfriend Olive Oyl, as he did in the strip. He was strong, but spinach made him invincible, and he needed to be invincible to beat up Bluto/Brutus who was originally a minion of the Sea Hag’s.
