Yes they should…so many of the new shows these days are full of disrespect, rudeness and violence.

    no.

what children watch should always be dictated by the child - their character, temperament, level of understanding, etc - and shouldn’t be restricted to cartoons, either.

some kids are fine watching the most grisly Animal Planet episodes while other kids would have nightmares for a week.

No. It is the parents job to monitor what their kids watch on tv. The networks should be free to air whatever they wish. That is why we have tv ratings and parental controls.

No. Why should they be? (Do you own stock in Hanna Barbara?)

I love Popeye. I’d watch him all day, no worries

But My Sons prefer Thomas the Tank Engine

The only ones I don’t let my son watch are Batman, anything with fighting, guns, stuff like that. He watched batman a few times and in the cartoon it says "i’m gonna kill you" so my 3 year old would run around saying that. I had no idea where he got it until I sat down and watch Batman with him. Since then…. no Batman.

Not necessarily. Those are classics and are the best. But there are some good wholesome cartoons out there right now for kids. My daughters love Mickey Mouse, Dora, The Backyardigans.

Why would you restrict your kids to those? I think a kid should watch things determined by their maturity and understanding. Those cartoons you mentioned still have some violence anyway. I’m just wondering why you would limit a kid to those cartoons.

Heck no. Just like live action programs, children’s cartoons should cover a wide range of styles and genres. There’s nothing wrong with those cartoons - but imagine if adults’ programs were limited to only documentaries.

In all honosty, I was raised being able to watch Beavis and butthead and ren and Stimpy when I was little. It never had some crazy negative effect on me, and in all honosty I think it was a great thing I got to see those shows, because it allowed me to ask questions. I am 37 weeks pregnant, and I dont think I will hide anything from my child. Being sheltered never helped anyone, and it’s important to know about the world around you. As long as the child enjoys the cartoon and you are open about what the show is and will openley discuss it, I dont see why it should not be allowed.

When I have kids they will be able to watch Disney the little kids stuff and Nick Jr and PBS and stuff like that. When they get older, like when they start taking an interest they can watch any Disney, Nick The-N.

I am not going to be a control happy parent.

This is one I can actually agree with. At least those cartoons weren’t mindless, pointless and strung with unfriendly, adultish humor. I miss the good ol’ days with the cartoons that were friendly for the whole family.

You forget shows that are also on PBS or KERA, not to mention Thomas the Tank Engine, Winnie the Pooh and toddler friendly programs.

Now we have things like "Chowder", "Total Drama Island" and "Pokimon". None of which I feel are family friendly.

no way. I love those cartoons but they weren’t nearly as stimulating as some of the things that are on today.

Nope. I have seen episodes of all of those cartoons that I don’t feel would be appropriate for my daughter. She has too much of a tendency to copy certain behaviors from tv.

I do think parents should restrict what their children watch though, depending on how certain types of scenes affect them. … When my kid was little (like 2 or 3) Scooby Doo scared her. Now that she’s 6 - I am ok with her watching it. There are also newer cartoons that I am fine with her seeing too. Dora the Explorer is ok. (although, she has outgrown it) Spongebob Squarepants is a nonsense waste of time. I haven’t seen much of it, but Wordgirl seems ok too.

Anything should be allowed on TV.
It is the parents job to say what their kids can and can not view.

I personally love the oldcartoons much more than todays cartoons.
i still watch Tom n Jerry, road runner, and popeye :)

There are many wholesome cartoons that aren’t 30 odd years old (don’t get me wrong, I love Scooby, Flintstones and the Jetsons) but there are also some really lame cartoons with semi-innapropriate material on some channels…. Cartoon network being one of them, I’m sad to say. For example "Total Drama Island", "Chowder", etc are just pointless, stupid, and aren’t even that entertaining.

One thing that bothers me is that some people assume just because a show looks "cartoon-y" or is animated, that it’s intended for children. Betty Boop was originally created for soldiers to watch over in Vietnam, and its not suitable for children, and yet Betty Boop is grouped with classics like Flintstones and Popeye. Most anime shows are intended for teens and young adults, but a lot of children watch them.

It really comes down to the parents moderating what their kids watch. Even if cartoons for older kids were aired on different channels than those for young kids, who’s to say children won’t just start watching that channel instead?

About cartoon violence in Batman, did that person ever watch Tom & Jerry or Wile E. Coyote & Roadrunner or Looney Toons? You don’t hear parents that grew up watching those cartoons complaining that they’re too violent.

Do you mean restricted like nobody is allowed to make new ones? No, I disagree with censorship. Parenting is for parents, yadda yadda.
Restricted like ‘parents should only allow their children to watch these’? WHY?! What merits do those shows posses? Frankly, all but Scooby Doo tend to promote values I really don’t like (mostly violence and gender stereotypes). Even if you do like those shows, there are more out there, as have been mentioned, that are nice educational shows that are as healthy as TV gets. They might not entertain me, but they’re great for the 3-to-6 year old crowd.

OK, I think people are misinterpreting your question. You aren’t saying limit to ONLY those you named, your intention is to give an example of style or "genre" of "morals." As a mom, I say, one……it is your job to know what your kids are exposed to and how it effects them. No young child can know what shows are appropriate for children. AND what threenorns said that only the child should dictate what they watch, ridiculous, do you let them dictate what they will and won’t eat??? What if they will only eat cookies and chips and ice cream because that is what they feel like eating, won’t wear a coat on a really cold day?? Two, yes, you DO limit and monitor their cartoons, just because they think it is fine doesn’t mean it’s healthy or ok.
My point is, what do you want your child learning? What are you ready to explain, what would they possibly repeat on the playground? Be ready to answer for it at a teacher conference or on a play date with friends. You are the parent, follow YOUR gut, not ours. My oldest NEVER repeated a cus word, a lot of people in the complex I lived in cussed, Not a word out of her. Now, my Son is another story, he repeats everything. I’ve had to closely monitor his exposure. It’s your kid, do what you can live with as a parent and what you can hold yor head up about. Everyone has an opinion, only you know your kid!!! Good Luck.

    restricted?

I think every parent should determine what is suitable for their kids to watch. But so far as a station or some agency "restricting" cartoons? No way.

the cartoons you list totally rock, btw
