In cartoon movie (POPEYE, Casper), baby (infant) send by pelicans. Why?
I'm Indonesian. When watching cartoon movies such as POPEYE, Casper, etc, baby always send by pelicans. Why? Can someone explain? Is that a myth? Thx b4.
@Momie, Gonzo, Ariel:
Thx 4 answering. Cuz in South East Asia (indonesia). There is no story like that.So it's Stork. I thought it was Pelican. LOL..
lol..They aren’t delivered by Pelican, they are delivered by Stork
In Western culture the White Stork is a symbol of childbirth. In Victorian times the details of human reproduction were difficult to approach, especially in reply to a younger child’s question of "Where did I come from?"; "The stork brought you to us" was the tactic used to avoid discussion of sex
Actually they are supposed to be storks but yes it’s just a way of adults back in the day to avoid the discussion that babies come from vaginas.
Actually it is a stork rather than pelican although perhaps in the cartoon Popeye the stork was replaced by a pelican for its association with the sea.
Basically the reason finds its origins in western Pagan beliefs. The stork is a migratory bird. It leaves Europe and flies to Africa for the winter. It returns during the spring and thus became a symbol of rebirth or birth also fertility and growth as essentially all aspects of Spring were viewed. Their return is also roughly 9 months following the sacred Pagan day of the Summer solstice and as you no doubt know it takes about 9 months for a baby to develop and be born.
Eventually Christianity replaced the old Pagan rituals and beliefs but many of their symbols morphed into what might be called "old wives tales" or common beliefs etc. The stork sort of simply became an icon that delivered babies to their parents.
