I thought about this when I noticed that her outfit was a typical old-fashioned Southern Italian peasant outfit. Then her name... then her stalker "Brutus" and I realized that Popeye was the great Yankee that was going to Americanize her and take her away from her brutish goombah. Does this make sense or am I totally paranoid?
Okay, rhino, Castor Oyl... but Castor was also Tiberius Caesar's son, and Nana is the way people call their grandmother in many Italian American families. (grandmother = "nonna" in Italian).

I don’t think so. Wikepedia says that her brother’s name is Castor, and her mother’s name is Nana (Banana), so I think it was just a cute play on words, and had nothing to do with her heritage. As far as Brutus go, remember he was originally Bluto. His character’s name was changed when King Features had purchased the rights for Popeye from Paramount Studios, back in the late 50’s-early 60’s.

Makes sense. Brutus is a name you find in Roman history too. Could be an American sailor comes along and sweeps her off her feet.
